Finnish Open Universities offer only a few courses taught in English. Examples of English-language courses can be found on the front page of our service. All English-language courses are listed by subject in alphabetical order:

Open Universities publish information about their courses in database at Avoinyliopisto.fi some 1-3 months before each course begins. Course programmes include information about course contents, registration and other relevant practices, as well as about the course organiser. Contact details are also provided for additional inquiries.

Instructions for using the database

All course programmes are listed by subject. The name of each course programme is accompanied by an icon indicating either a study module or a study unit.

Study module
Study modules consist of two or more study units. Most modules are at the basic level.

Study unit in a study module
A study unit is a content-based, structural unit. The name of a study unit describes its content, while the number of credits indicates the scope. A study unit can feature one or more than one teaching method, as well as other work methods (e.g. a lecture series and an examination, literature examinations or an online course).

Separate study unit
A study unit that is separate from study modules. Most English-language courses are separate study units.

Open University studies in Finnish and Swedish

The course database at Avoinyliopisto.fi contains information about courses available at all Finnish Open Universities. Most of the courses are taught in Finnish. To access an overview of each university’s Open University courses, please click on Tiedot yliopistoittain (Courses by university). The information is available only in Finnish.

The information is grouped hierarchically.

• Each university’s Open University courses are listed by field of study.
• All courses offered by a university are listed by subject under the field of study.
• All courses (study modules and/or study units) offered in a subject are listed under that subject.
• By clicking on a course name, you can access further information.
