English Academic and Professional Skills: Reading, Writing and Spoken Communication (for Students of Arts, Behavioural and Social Sciences)
The aim of the course is for students to develop skills in the academic and professional English of their field and to gain confidence to communicate in situations relevant to their studies and professional life. The intention is that students improve their ability to
- understand general and academic spoken language, extract information and identify viewpoints
- discuss academic and general topics, presenting ideas and opinions
- read and understand academic texts and extract information
- write clear and structured academic texts using the vocabulary of their field
- communicate more fluently, clearly, spontaneously and accurately
- take responsibility for their own learning through active engagement and self-evaluation.
Depending on the particular needs of the group, the course will include
- using spoken and/or written material relating to relevant fields from a range of sources such as journals, (text) books, the Internet
- reading the material, applying appropriate strategies
- writing texts relevant to the students' academic and professional needs
- practicing individual study in reading and listening
- presenting and discussing topics related to the fields of study
- becoming familiar with strategies and tools for future language development.
A variety of evaluation methods will be used, including peer- and self-assessment, portfolios and the continuous evaluation of performance. Students are expected to engage actively in the tasks and other work agreed upon at the beginning of and/or during the course.

Opintoryhmä kokoontuu maanantaisin klo 17.30-19.45 opistotalossa (Mannerheiminkatu 15) aikavälillä 13.9.- 29.11.2010. Kolmen kokoontumiskerran ajankohdasta sovitaan erikseen yhdessä opettajan kanssa. Oppitunteja kaikkiaan 42. Opettajana toimii FM Kirsti Rautio.
