This course aims to introduce writing principles and strategies that are useful for professional purposes. During the course, students write texts that are targeted to audiences with different expectations, representing a variety of contexts. To enhance readability of the texts, students apply organizational patterns, such as problem-solution and comparison-contrast, as well as employ other writing principles that make comprehension of sentences and paragraphs easier. In addition, students engage in a writing process which requires giving, getting, and responding to peer feedback. Revision of writing will be further addressed through the use of on-line tools, such as dictionaries, thesauri, and corpora.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Plan, write, and revise texts aimed at different audiences requiring different levels of description and formality
- Construct sentences and paragraphs which are cohesive and easy to read
- Use on-line language resources to independently edit one's own text
